Our Admissions

Cohort Size

For each year, we aim for a cohort size of about 120 students. We expect our students to complete their study no longer than 4 years (see the Evaluation Standard Page for more information). The students will be divided into 6 homeroom classes--that is, 20 students in each class. Each homeroom class will be assigned with a homeroom teacher, who will be responsible for taking care of his/her students.

Note that the homeroom classes serve only as a community of mutual support, it does not limit students’ freedom in choosing what classes to take. The actual class size may vary from 10 to 50 students, depending on the number of students who signed up for the class. Class enrollment is neither constrained by the students’ homeroom class, nor by their cohort.

However, when a competition or a festival is held at school, homeroom will be the primary unit of activity. Students will collaborate with their homeroom classmates and compete with other homerooms. We believe such organization of students life allows students to be both independent and supported, as well as learning both collaboration and competition.

To ensure the diversity of our student body and make our prestigious educational resources to everyone regardless of their socio-economic background, the admission to our school is by invitation only. We will randomly select graduating 8th graders and send them invitation letters. They will be admitted as soon as they accept our invitation.

We expect each cohort to have 60% of in-state students, 30% of out-of-state students, and 10% of international students. Such break down also allows geographical diversity of our students. We understand that at the high school level, students are often not geographically mobile and in-state students are more likely to accept our invitation, even though we are a private school. Hence, we will use stratified sampling instead of a simple random sample of all 8th graders in the US. The sampling process are listed below. Note that we might adjust the numbers according to last year’s enrollment, which will provide us a more accurate expectation for the percentage of invited students who will accept our offer.

Application Process

In-State Students

We expect 70% of the invited in-state students will accept our offer. This means we will send invitations to 102 randomly selected in-state graduating 8th grader, so that hopefully 72 of them will accept our offer, who will then constitute 60% of the incoming cohort.

Out-of-State Students

We expect 15% of the invited out-of-state students will accept our offer. This means we will send invitations to 240 randomly selected students who are currently 8th graders in the United States but out of our state. Hopefully 36 of them will accept our offer and make up 30% of the incoming cohort.

International Students

We firmly believe international students are an indispensible part of education under globalization. Unfortunately, we do not have sufficient resources to use the same method to draw a sample from all 8th graders in the world. Therefore, for international students, we developed a different sampling frame. All interested international applicants should register an account on our international application system (a minimum of 80 on TOEFL is required to complete the online registration process). We will randomly accept 12 registered international applicants to be the rest 10% of our student body.

Assignment into Homeroom Class

We also want to ensure diversity within homeroom. In the June before each academic year, we will randomly assign incoming students into one of the 6 homerooms in their cohort. If very unbalanced classroom demographic breakdown occurs (which, statistically speaking, is very unlikely), we will redo the random assignment.
